Russian museum

TheState Russian Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of Russian fineart. It was opened on March 7,  1898 bydecree of Tsar Nicholas II and was country’s first ever state museum of Russianfine art, which was able to present the visitors the whole history of itsdevelopment.  Nowadays the collection ofthe Russian Museum numbers some 400.000 works and covers the entire history ofRussian fine art from the tenth century to the present day. It reflects virtuallyevery form and genre of art in Russia, including a unique collection of OldRussian icons, works of painting, graphic art and sculpture, decorative andapplied art, folk art and numismatics, as well as the world’s finest collectionof Russian avant-garde.  The main complexof museum buildings - the Mikhailovsky Palace and Benois Wing - houses thepermanent exhibition of the Russian Museum, tracing the entire history ofRussian art from the tenth to the twentieth centuries.

Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

TheChurch of the Savior on Spilled Blood has been erected in 1883-1907, on a placewhere on March, 1st, 1881 have mortally wounded Tsar Alexander (Liberator)II.

TheChurch is the largest monument of Russian mosaic art. Picturesque mosaic compositionswere created in Alexander and Vladimir Frolovyh's workshop under originals ofartists of Victor Vasnetsova, Nikolay Bruni, etc. In a temple the mosaicentirely covers walls, columns and the arches.

Thecathedral attracts with large number of a decor – figured frames, the corbel archesfilled with mosaic inserts, a multicoloured tiles. The particular interestrepresents a covering of five heads of a cathedral by jeweler enamel, whicharea is 1000 square meters. For the first time external dressing of a buildingby a mosaic was widely applied also!

The Yusupov Palace

TheYusupov Palace, a unique historical landmark of federal importance showcasingarchitectural trends from the 18th through 20th centuries, has been rightfullyacclaimed as the "encyclopedia" of St. Petersburg aristocratic interiordesign. The Palace and estate took nearly 200 years to acquire its presentshape with contributions from the best architectural talent of the time: J.-B.Vallain de la Motte, A.M. Mikhailov 2nd, B. Simone, H. Monigetti, W. Kennel, A.Stepanov, A, Vaitens, and A. Beloborodov. Five generations of Russia's elitearistocratic dynasty, the Yusupovs, owned the palace between 1830 and 1917.Many of Russia's and St. Petersburg's historical highlights were associatedwith the Yusupov family nest on the Moika.

TheAssassination of Grigory Rasputin exhibit was created in 1993-1996 in thechambers of the younger Yusupovs, where the events portrayed had actually takenplace. The authors of the exposition were mainly guided by the memoirs ofPrince F. Yusupov and the diaries of V. Purishkevich, but due credence was givento other historical sources and the findings of contemporary researchers, whohave offered alternative, sometimes highly unorthodox theories about theassassination.

The Pushkin Apartment Museum

The Pushkin Apartment Museum, located on the river Moika Embankment #12, isthe only memorial Pushkin museum in the city which tells about the last periodof the poet's life and work. There Pushkin, mortally wounded at the duel, diedon January 29, 1837, and there one can see things that belonged to Pushkin andhis family. One of the most important events in the Museum life is the holdingin the courtyard of the house of the annual memorial meeting on February 10(the day of the poet's death), which is attended by the community, foreignguests, representatives of the creative intelligentsia, and members of theRussian Government and the Authorities of Saint-Petersburg. At 2.45 p.m., incommemoration of the moment when Pushkin's heart stopped beating, the moment ofsilence is observed. On Pushkin's birthday - May 26 (June 6, new style) - theMuseum holds the festival "Pushkin-Petersburg", in which othercultural institutions of St. Petersburg also take part. The museum was openedin this house as late as in 1925. Various landlords and offices had owned thehouse be fore.

Petrodvorets (Petergof)

The Grand Palace (Petergof)

Thecentral focal point of the palace and park ensemble of Peterhof is the GrandPalace, its most monumental and representative building. From the time of PeterI and to the early 20th century it was the official summer residence of theRussian Emperors and Empresses. During the reign of Elizaveta Petrovna thepalace was reconstructed by Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli, the unsurpassedmaster of the Baroque style in architecture. He created the northern suite ofhalls, the Main Staircase, and the Ball Room, decorated with exuberant giltcarving, restored after the Second World War. Its mirrors, picturesqueplafonds, and silks underline the luxury and the idea of the imperial power.

The Peter and Paul Fortress

ThePeter and Paul Fortress was laid on May, 27th, 1703.

Underthe legend, Peter I has chosen by himself a place for a new fortress – smallHare (Zayachiy) Island, which one is located in a mouth of the Neva river.

AllRussian emperors and empresses were buried in The Fortress: from Peter I toNikolay II, except for Peter II and John VI. The buildings which have been constructedduring XVIII–XIX centuries in fortress territory have different function: theBotnyj House, Artillery Tseihgauz, the Mint (Monetny Dvor), the Commandant'sand Engineering house, a Guardhouse and others.

Alreadyin a XVIII-th century the fortress became a jail of the state criminals, afterin XIX century it was the main political prison of Russia. The prison of theTrubetskoy bastion has turned to a museum in 1924.

In1954 the complex of buildings of the Peter and Paul Fortress has been transferredto the State museum of history of Leningrad (now: St.-Petersburg).

Menshikovsky palace

TheMenshikovsky palace located on University embankment of Vasilevsky island, ithas been erected by request of A.D.Menshikov wh was the first GovernorS.-Petersburg and also was associate of Peter The First. The palace was themost magnificent building of Petersburg of Peter’s time and often served as aplace of solemn diplomatic events and assemblies.

Hermitage

Themodern State Hermitage consists of five majestic buildings.

The Treasure Gallery

The Treasure Gallery, one of the most interesting collections of themuseum, got its name in the 18th century during the reign of Catherine theGreat. It consists of two sections. The first, called the Gold Rooms has worksfrom Eurasia, the Black Sea Littoral in antiquity, and the Orient. It consistsof around 1,500 works made from gold and dating from the 7th century B.C. tothe 19th century A.D. The main idea of the second section, which is called theDiamond Rooms, is to show the development of the jeweler's craft over thecourse of mankind's many centuries of history from the third millennium B.C. tothe start of the 20th century.

Excursion along Million street

Theterritory of present Million street was a settlement of the provided foreignersin the first half of XVIII-th century. The rich building is associated withcloseness of imperial residence — the Winter Palace. Many Guards barracks werein this street, which inhabitants were also friends of Pushkin. Guardsmen conducteda free way of life - night walks, late returns were everyday occurrences,therefore knock of hoofs and loud shouts on an evening on Million street were acharacteristic sign of Pushkin Petersburg …

Saint Isaac's Cathedral or Isaakievsky Sobor

SaintIsaac's Cathedral was erected by architect Ogjust Monferran, tit is anoutstanding monument of late Russian classicism of the middle of a XIX-thcentury. Magnificent Cathedral furniture present  all kinds of a monumental and decoration artsuch as painting, sculpture, mosaic, colour stone facing. The main iconostasis ofCathedral was decorated by malachite and lazurite columns. There is thestained-glass window «Revived Christ» in the main altar. Also it is unconventionalfor furniture of an orthodox temple.

Excursion to Tsarskoje Selo (Pushkin)

Pushkinwas founded in 1710 as  an  imperial country residence Tsarskoje Selo, itbecame the city in 1808. There is a memorial estate "Tsarskoje Selo"in the city. It is a monument of town-planning art and palace ensemble of XVIII-th— the beginnings of the XX-th centuries. The structure of ensemble includesEkaterininsky Park with the Ekaterininsky Palace and other constructions.

Ekaterininsky park

Itis one of five parks of  Tsarskoje Selo .The Great Ekaterininsky Palace surrounds Ekaterininsky  park , it is directly making magnificentpalace and park ensemble. The Park consists of a regular Old garden and alandscape Formal (English style) garden. The park is a part of the State Art ArchitecturalPalace and Park Memorial Estate "Tsarskoje Selo". More than 100architectural constructions is located in the territory of Ekaterininsky park.There are majestic palaces, monuments, pavilions, bridges, marble monuments,the exotic constructions that executed in imitation to Gothic, Turkish, Chinesearchitecture in the Park.

Ekaterininsky Palace

Amber room

Amberroom is the «Pearl of the Ekaterininsky Palace». It is called also «One ofmiracles of the World». The hard work of reconstruction of "The eighthmiracle of the World» had proceeded almost 24 years, and only for 300-year-oldanniversary of St.-Petersburg it was completely restored. At present legendaryAmber room receives visitors.

Excursion to Pavlovsk

The composition of park includes 7landscape areas: Court, the Valley of the Slavyanka River, the Big Star with aValley of Ponds, the Old Silvija, the New Silvija, the Smart Field and theWhite Birch. The pavilions are real adornments of the park: the FriendshipTemple, Apollo's Colonnade, the Open-air Cage, the Cold Bath, the Round Hall,Pink Pavilion, Molochnya, the Pil-Tower; the Monument to Parents, bridges overthe Slavyanka river, marble and bronze sculptures.

The cruiser Aurora

TheAurora's keel was laid down at the "New Admiralty" shipyard inSt.Petersburg on 23 May 1897. The cruiser was launched on 11 May 1900 andjoined the Navy of Russia in July1903. For 45 years the museum has been visitedby more than 28 million people from 160 countries. In 1968 the cruiser Aurorawas decorated with the Order of the October Revolution. In July 1992 the SaintAndrew Naval Banner - the symbol of Russian naval power - was raised over theship again.
